Lamp Recycling

Environmental Sustainability
  • GE Lighting, a Savant Company recommends recycling Compact Fluorescent Bulbs (CFLs) and Linear Fluorescent tubes at the end of their life.  All fluorescent bulbs require a very small amount of mercury to operate with high efficiency.  Recycling recovers lamp materials, including mercury, for reuse.
  • LED light bulbs and LED light fixtures can be recycled by the same companies that recycle CFLs.  Although there is no mercury contained in these products, their materials can be captured for reuse.
Government Regulations
  • Recycling of mercury-containing light bulbs is required by some state/provincial governments – states requiring homeowner recycling of  CFLs or Linear Fluorescent Tubes are CA, MA, ME, MN, NH, RI, VT and WA.  In Canada, government mandated light bulb recycling programs are in operation in British Columbia, Quebec, Manitoba and PEI.  For additional information on state or provincial regulations please visit www.lamprecycle.org.
  • EPA – For more information on recycling CFL lamps or cleaning up broken Fluorescent lamps please visit https://www.epa.gov/mercury/compact-fluorescent-light-bulbs-cfls
Homeowner Recycling Locations

While the packaging from most lighting products can be recycled in common home recycling collection systems for plastics and cardboard, the light bulbs cannot be recycled in these curbside collection systems.   The lightbulbs must the dropped off at special collection sites for CFL or LED products.  Look for light bulb recycling locations located at some retailers selling these products or look for a municipal recycling center or a household hazardous waste collection center or collection event.

If you are in a remote location without a convenient drop-off location, a home recycling kit can be ordered from Veolia, a major light bulb recycling company in the United States.  Please visit: www.recycleabulb.com

Packaging Recycling

REDUCE - GE Lighting, a Savant Company has been continually reducing our use of Plastic and Cardboard for light bulb packaging over the past decade.  Most packaging used today has shifted away from plastic and is primarily cardboard. The total reduction in packaging material reduces CO2 emissions by reducing the amount of packaging that is manufactured.  A reduction in packaging volume and packaging weight per light bulb also reduces CO2 emissions from transportation.

REUSE – Both the Cardboard and the Plastic used in GE Lighting, a Savant Company light bulb packaging contain recycled content.

RECYCLE - The vast majority of light bulb packaging used today is cardboard.  The cardboard used by GE Lighting, a Savant Company for light bulbs is 100% recyclable by all household recycling systems.
